DIAGNOSIS

Moths relatively small; forewing with more or less irregular fasciae.

Posterior tibia with bunch of scent scales in many species; abdomen with lateral pockets containing scent scales.

Uncus (almost completely) atrophied, socius occasionally preserved, bristled; tuba analis usually membranous, simple. Sacculus with variable groups of spines, usually with a median group; cucullus slender; fold vestigial or absent. Aedeagus simple, without cornuti; caulis short, often broad.

Sterigma tubular, often expanding anteriorly, connected with subgenital sternite by means of more or less elaborate membranous sac; colliculum very slender, marked by a weak inner sclerite, or not differentiated; ductus seminalis situated posteriorly. Corpus bursae with large plate-shaped signum that is folded longitudinally, or signum absent. Posterior corners of seventh sternite produced.

Early stages:

Swatschek, 1958, provides a diagnosis for the larvae of 5 species (Lobesia and Polychrosis).
Crochets on abdominal prolegs biordinal; L1 and L2 more or less equal in length on abdominal segments; D1 and SD1 on a shared pinaculum on A9; SV group trisetose on A1-7 and bisetose on A8-9, or bisetose on A7 (Lobesia reliquana).

Biology:

Two to three generations yearly; hibernation in larval or pupal stage. Larvae feed in spun leaves, flowers and seeds of various plants, e.g. Salix, Quercus, Fagus, Juniperus, Solidago and Allium. Lobesia botrana is a pest on Vitis.

Distribution:

Palaearctic and Nearctic Regions.
