Genus Cochylis

Cochylis Treitschke
Type species: rubellana Hübner

DIAGNOSIS

External characters:

Venation:
venation Cochylis nana ; venation Cochylis posterana
Forewing: All veins are separate; CuP absent.
Hindwing: R - M 1 stalked.

Forewing shape and markings:
Cochylis epilinana adults
Moths small. Median fascia inwardly oblique, or only partly preserved.

Sexual dimorphism:
Sexual dimorphism usually indistinct; in some species the sexes differ in colouration, size and/or shape of forewing.

Genitalia:

Male:
male gen. Cochylis epilinana
Tegumen short, broad, with distinctly differentiated distal part fused with relatively short socii; distal part of tegumen with some delicate bristles. Uncus usually absent or strongly reduced, represented by a minute prominence of terminal part of tegumen; exceptionally uncus well developed. Vinculum interrupted ventrally, with usually slender lateral parts. Terminal part of valva slender; base broad. Sacculus with various processes or prominences and often with free termination. Central part of transtilla, curved, usually armed with terminal teeth (not developed in 2 species). Distal part of aedeagus slender, coecum penis well developed, caulis small or distinctly elongate; cornuti in form of numerous non-capitate spines and (if present) a spined plate.

Female:
female gen. Cochylis epilinana
Ovipositor normally developed or, in some species, telescopic. Sterigma species-specific, distal part of postvaginal portion well sclerotized; anterior and lateral parts of sterigma membranous, forming large sac. Ductus bursae ill-differentiated in some species, provided with various sclerites. Corpus bursae usually membranous, minutely spined throughout.

Taxonomic note:

Several species-groups can be distinguished in the genus. Some of them have been described as distinct subgenera, but according to Razowski, 1987a, they should all be treated as synonyms of Cochylis.

Early stages:

Swatschek, 1958, provides the following diagnosis for the larvae of different species groups.
- hybridella/posterana/dubitana/roseana : Second stemma equidistant from first and third. Abdominal prolegs have 12 to 18 crochets, arranged in a circle. L3 bisetose on seventh abdominal segment.
- nana : SV group bisetose on the first, second, seventh and eighth abdominal segments, unisetose on the ninth. Second stemma situated closer to the third than to the first. Seta D2 situated ventro-caudal to D1 on prothoracic shield.
- atricapitana : SV group bisetose on the first, second and seventh abdominal segments, unisetose on the eighth and ninth. Setae L1 and L2 are set diagonally on the eighth abdominal segment. Second stemma equidistant from first and third.

Biology:

There are one or two generations yearly; hibernation occurs in the larval stage. The larvae feed in various parts of plants, mainly on Compositae.

Distribution:

The genus occurs in the Palaearctic, Nearctic, Oriental and Neotropical Regions.
