DIAGNOSIS

External characters:

Venation:

Forewing: Chorda originating halfway between R 1 and R 2, terminating near R 5;
M -stem rudimentary, bifurcate, terminating halfway between M 1 and M 2, and at CuA 1; M 2 and M 3 connate or approximate at base.
Hindwing: M 3 and CuA 1 stalked; all other veins separate.

Forewing: (Barbara herrichiana, Barbara fulgens) Forewing with apex rounded and termen slightly convex, without costal fold; ground colour greyish brown to bronze, with irregular whitish to leaden-grey fasciae.

Genitalia:

Male:

Uncus vestigial; socius long. Valva with large notch in ventral margin, angle of cucullus sharp; basal opening extending towards cucullus; costal hook distinct; clasper absent; aedeagus simple.

Female:

female genitalia B. fulgens
Sterigma short, expanding posteriorly; cingulum developed; corpus bursae with one or two signa.

Early stages:

Swatschek, 1958, provides the following diagnosis for larvae of Barbara herrichiana :
L1, L2 and L3 do not share one pinaculum on the ninth abdominal segment. SV group trisetose on eighth abdominal segment and bisetose on ninth abdominal segment. Surface of body with small brown thorns; surface of prothoracic plate not smooth.

Biology:

Larvae feed on cones of various conifers.
Barbara herrichiana : There is a single generation yearly; hibernation takes place in the larval stage.

Palaearctic and Nearctic Regions.
