Forewing: Chorda extending from mid-distance between R 1-R 2 to before base of R 5; M -stem to before M 2, or atrophying; M 2-M 3 in close proximity basally.
Hindwing: M 3 and CuA 1 stalked.

Male:

Uncus absent or rudimentary; socii weak, scarcely haired. Valva strong, basal opening large, sacculus long, neck short, cucullus with or without glabrous ventral process. Aedeagus strong, usually with thorns.
Female:

Sterigma, a double, scobinate, hairy patch situated beyond a cup-shaped basal portion, extending dorso-posteriorly, fusing with antrum to which an internal sclerite may attach; cingulum absent; corpus bursae with two signa, or without signa.
Early stages:
Swatschek, 1958, provides a diagnosis for the larvae based on chaetotaxy of three European species.
L1, L2 and L3 on separate pinacula. SV group trisetose on abdominal segments 3-6, bisetose on abdominal segments 7-9. On all abdominal segments a small fourth L-seta present posterior to the spiracle (most easily found on eighth abdominal segment). Prothoracic plate without minute thorns; crochets on abdominal prolegs uniordinal.
Biology:
One generation yearly; hibernation in larval stage; larva in twigs of conifers.
Distribution:
Palaearctic and Nearctic regions.
Artificially introduced to Neotropical region (buoliana).
