DIAGNOSIS

External characters:

Venation:

Forewing: chorda originating at mid-distance R 1-R 2, reaching base of R 5; M -stem strong, terminating at base of M 2 or mid-distance M 2-M 3.
Hindwing: M 3 and CuA 1 connate.

Forewing without costal fold; ocellus well developed.

Genitalia:

Male:
male genitalia E. formosana
Pedunculus long, slender; uncus simple, rather weakly sclerotized, haired dorso-laterally; socius broad, lateral, hairy; tuba analis membranous. Valva small, with large basal opening; sacculus not angulated posteriorly; cucullus small, bristled, provided with small ventro-lateral thorn. Aedeagus simple, without cornuti.

Female:
female genitalia E. formosana
Sterigma completely reduced; distal part of ductus bursae forming a short, sclerotic tube; ductus seminalis extending from mid-part of ductus bursae. Only one signum present in corpus bursae: a triangular, concave plate.

Early stages:

Swatschek, 1958, provides the following diagnosis for the larvae based on chaetotaxy.
Setae D1 and D2 on a shared pinaculum on the ninth abdominal segment; SV group trisetose on seventh abdominal segment and bisetose on eighth and ninth abdominal segment; sutura coronalis not longer than width of adfrontals at tip of clypeus.

Biology:

Larvae live under the bark of the host plant; second to fifth instar larvae hibernate.
Polyphagous on Prunaceae.

Distribution:

Palaearctic and Nearctic Regions.
