DIAGNOSIS
External characters:
Venation:
Forewing: M -stem and chorda absent. All veins separate.
Hindwing: M 3 and CuA 1 long stalked.

Forewing slender, without costal fold; apex rounded, termen slightly convex,
extensively overlaid with ferruginous-ochreous distally or with ferruginous or purplish flush.

Male:

Uncus and gnathos absent. Socii rudimentary, not curved outward. Valva without clasper; narrow; neck of valva long; cucullus oval. Aedeagus without spines on walls.
Female:
female genitalia C. sylvestrana
Sterigma reduced; antrum sclerotized; cingulum developed; corpus bursae with two rather long signa.
Early stages:
Swatschek, 1958, provides the following diagnosis for the larvae based on chaetotaxy of Clavigesta sylvestrana.
L1, L2 and L3 do not share one pinaculum on the ninth abdominal segment; SV group bisetose on seventh, eighth and ninth abdominal segment. A small 4th L seta is situated posterior to pinaculum on the abdominal segments. Crochets on abdominal prolegs appear biordinal because they are not all of the same length.
Biology:
There is one generation yearly; hibernation takes place in the larval stage. Larvae feed in buds and twigs of conifers.
Distribution:
Known from the Palaearctic and Nearctic regions.
