Subfamilia Olethreutinae

Introduction

The Olethreutinae include over 3190 species and 335 genera, which are placed in 6 tribes. The species included on this PROJECT all belong to the three most derived tribes Olethreutini, Eucosmini and Grapholitini.
Females in this subfamily deposit single eggs or in small groups. Oligophagous leaf rollers are prevalent in Olethreutini and generalized Eucosmini, and monophagous stem, root, and fruit borers are characteristic of the more derived Eucosmini and Grapholitini. In the three mentioned tribes, pheromones are based on a 12-carbon chain.

Antenna with one ring of scales per flagellar segment. Forewing often with costal fold and strigulae. Hindwing usually with cubital pecten; often with sex scaling on anal margin. Male genitalia with transtilla absent, gnathos reduced, aedeagus fused with anellus and juxta, rarely with coecum developed, often with deciduous and nondeciduous cornuti; valva with inner face strongly sclerotized except for basal excavation (basal fossula), costal hook usually present, cucullus often delimited by neck. Female genitalia: sterigma usually not connected with anterior apophyses; ductus bursae often with colliculum in form of ring, often with separate sclerotized ring (cingulum) near inception of ductus seminalis; signa present or absent, often two present.
