DIAGNOSIS

External characters:

Venation:

Forewing: Chorda extending from 2/3 distance R 1-R 2 to mid-distance R 5- M 1; M-stem to before base of M 3.
Hindwing: M 3 and CuA 1 stalked.

Forewing shape and markings:
examples of Spilonota spp.
Forewing elongate, termen straight or slightly oblique. Costal fold absent.

Additional characters:
Antenna of male with a small notch immediately beyond scape dorsally.

Male:

Uncus greatly reduced. Socius erect, short, subtriangular. Gnathos free and weak. Valva elongate, narrow, neck very narrow, cucullus armed with a strong spine. Aedeagus short; supporting arm of anellus very stout; cornuti composed of a cluster of elongate spines.

Female:

Papilla analis flattened, with numerous hairs; anterior portion narrow and weakly bending inwards. Sterigma fused with seventh abdominal sternite, subtriangular or trapiziform, caudal margin with a median emargination or notch. Ostial opening oval; ductus bursae well-sclerotized, except for a short membranous posterior portion; corpus bursae round, with a pair of short, curved, pointed signa.

Early stages:

Swatschek, 1958, provides the following diagnosis for the larvae based on chaetotaxy of Spilonota ocellana :
SV group trisetose on first and second abdominal segments, bisetose on seventh, eighth and ninth; both D2 seta, as well as setae D1 and SD1 on shared pinacula on ninth abdominal segment. V setae further apart on ninth abdominal segment than on eighth. L1, L2 and L3 set in a diagonal line on prothorax.

Biology:

One to two generations yearly; hibernation in larval stage; larvae feed on a variety of plants belonging to different plant families.

Distribution:

Palaearctic, Nearctic and Oriental regions.
