Forewing shape and markings
examples of Adoxophyes adults
Species of the genus Adoxophyes have relatively broad forewings; the apex can be rounded or slightly produced. In males, the forewings have a costal fold. The ground colour is yellowish brown to greyish brown. The markings are variable, and often greatly reduced in females. The median fascia is often bifurcate at dorsum.
Sexual dimorphism:
The forewings of males are expand more terminally, and are provided with a costal fold.
Genitalia:
Male:
male genitalia A. orana ; male genitalia A. privatana
Uncus expanding terminally; gnathos arm convex ventro-laterally; socius small; valva large, densely plicate radially, with rather delicate sclerite of disc, occasionally with elongate distal part; sacculus simple; transtilla divided medially, dentate above; aedeagus simple, with short coecum penis and minute caulis.
Female:
female gen. A. orana ; female gen. A. privatana
Sterigma delicate, with ill-defined anterior portion and tapering terminally lateral parts; antrum small, provided with incomplete tubular sclerite; ductus seminalis situated posteriorly, near antrum. Signum in posterior part of corpus bursae, thorn-like and strongly curved.
Early stages:
Eggs of the species included on this PROJECT are flat and oval, yellowish in colour and laid in fairly large batches. Full-grown larvae are about 18-20 mm long, yellowish or greenish in colour. Swatschek, 1958, provides the following diagnosis based on chaetotaxy of 1 Palaearctic species (Adoxophyes orana).
The crochets on the abdominal prolegs are arranged in a circle; the crochets are small and equal in length anteriorly and bigger and clearly arranged biordinally posteriorly. The second stemma is situated closer to the third than to the first. Spiracle on abdominal segments 2-7 not bigger than basal ring of seta SD1. On eighth abdominal segment SD1 situated equally high as the spiracle. The V setae are situated further apart on the ninth abdominal segment than on the eighth.
Pupae are light to dark brown; forewing with characteristic bifurcation of two radial veins.
Biology:
Adoxophyes orana hibernates in the larval stages, and so does the oriental Adoxophyes privatana although this species also rarely overwinters in the pupal or adult stage. No diapause was observed in the winter for the smaller tea tortrix Adoxophyes sp.
Species have two to several generations yearly. Larvae are polyphagous.
Distribution:
The genus occurs in all regions except probably for the Neotropical Region.
